Who is Teen Therapy For?

Teen therapy is a collaborative process where adolescents explore their emotions, behaviors, and identity in a safe environment. Unlike adult therapy, we focus on the unique challenges of adolescence—social pressures, self-esteem, family dynamics, and the exhausting quest to "figure it all out." Through talk therapy tailored to their developmental stage, teens learn to:

  • Express emotions constructively
  • Navigate friendships and romantic relationships
  • Manage academic/social burnout
  • Build self-trust during this transformative life phase

Signs Your Teen Might Need Support

Today’s teens face unprecedented pressures. Therapy can help if your child:

  • Withdraws from family/friends or activities they once loved
  • Struggles with academic stress or perfectionism
  • Experiences mood swings beyond typical adolescence
  • Faces challenges with identity, self-esteem, or social media anxiety
  • Needs guidance through family changes (divorce, moving, cultural expectations)

Therapy isn’t about "fixing" your teen—it’s about giving them tools to thrive.

How My Services Can Help!

In my work with teens, I create a space where they can drop the exhausting act of having it all together. Adolescence today comes with unique pressures—from the curated perfection of social media to the whiplash of rapidly shifting friendships and family expectations. Through collaborative talk therapy, we work on untangling the knots of self-doubt, anxiety, and overwhelm that so many teens silently carry. Rather than lecturing or dictating solutions, I help them develop their own emotional toolkit: ways to identify what they're truly feeling beneath the "I'm fine," strategies to cope with academic stress without burning out, and skills to set boundaries in relationships while staying connected.

What makes this approach effective is that we meet teens where they are—whether that's working through social anxiety, processing family changes, or simply figuring out who they are amidst all the noise. Many teens come in believing their struggles are just "drama" or something they should handle alone; together, we reframe this as the courageous work of self-discovery. As they gain insight into their thought patterns and emotional responses, they develop something far more valuable than temporary fixes: authentic self-confidence that isn't dependent on likes, grades, or anyone else's approval. The transformation I witness isn't just about solving problems—it's about teens reclaiming the joy and curiosity that gets buried under all that pressure to perform and conform.

Benefits of Teen Therapy

The journey through therapy helps teens move from surviving to thriving in ways that often surprise them. Initially, many experience relief simply from having a neutral adult who listens without judgment—someone who helps them make sense of the emotional whirlwind that adolescence can be. As we continue working together, they typically notice concrete changes: easier mornings because they're sleeping better, healthier friendships as they learn to communicate needs, and more energy for activities they genuinely enjoy rather than what they "should" be doing.

Perhaps most importantly, teens develop what I call an inner compass—the ability to check in with themselves when making decisions rather than automatically following the crowd. This might look like choosing to log off social media when it makes them feel worse instead of endlessly scrolling, or having tough conversations with parents instead of shutting down. The confidence and skills they build don't disappear after graduation; they become foundations for healthier relationships, career choices, and self-understanding that lasts well into adulthood. While every teen's path looks different, the common thread is this: therapy helps them stop just getting through each day and start actually enjoying this transformative chapter of life.

How is privacy handled for teens?

To establish trust and a safe space to discuss concerns, privacy is a collaborative effort with the teen to ensure that if parents or caregivers are given any information about themselves, it’s on their terms regarding when is the best time to disclose and to practice having tough conversations with loved ones rather than avoiding it or having other people do it for them. Exceptions to this are anything that would present a danger to the teens’ safety.

Do you offer family therapy?

While I don’t offer family therapy as a service, sometimes parents are brought into a session as a guest with their teen to discuss important matters. A parent can request to sit in a session with a teen or the teen can request their parent or family member attend a session to discuss concerns.

As a parent, can I be involved with my teen’s treatment?

Absolutely! Some parents are okay with allowing their teen to have their own time with their therapist and only being involved when they need to be brought in. For parents who’d like to be more involved, I offer monthly parent consults where we discuss what strategies and interventions are being worked on in session and any concerns parents have that they think might be helpful for me to know. Please inquire for more information about the monthly parent consults during a consultation!
